Safety & Technology Features Comparison

When it comes to safety and technology, the Grand Cherokee L comes standard with many advanced features that you will find optional on the Grand Cherokee. As standard features, you will have a massive 10.25-inch frameless digital gauge cluster, an 8.4-inch touchscreen, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-path detection, and full-speed forward collision warning with advanced brake assist. As optional, you can upgrade to a 10.1-inch touchscreen for a larger interface display. On the other hand, the Grand Cherokee has a 7-inch touchscreen and a 7-inch customizable in-cluster display, while higher trim levels get the 8.4-inch touchscreen upgrade.

Exterior & Interior Comparison

The Grand Cherokee L has a modern exterior that is much sleeker than the Grand Cherokee’s current exterior looks. Still, for 2022, you can expect the Grand Cherokee to receive an update that will make it look similar to the Grand Cherokee L’s styling. Inside, you will find that the Grand Cherokee L adds a third-row of seating to accommodate even more passengers, while the Grand Cherokee still retains the two-row. The Grand Cherokee L should have more overall passenger and cargo space since it has larger exterior dimensions, which is expected since it’s a full-size SUV.

Off-Road Capability Comparison

Both of these SUVs excel in off-roading capability, making them superior to many other options in their categories. Their four-wheel-drive systems and high ground clearance allow them to conquer the most challenging terrains with complete ease. You will find other technologically advanced equipment on these SUVs to provide further help during off-road adventures, such as the off-road information pages accessible through the infotainment screen. Although both are similar, the Grand Cherokee has a Trailhawk off-road-oriented trim, which the Grand Cherokee L doesn’t feature, providing off-road equipment to improve its capabilities. Some of the off-road-specific features include the Quadra-Drive II four-wheel-drive system, Quadra-Lift air suspension, electronic limited-slip differential, and 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tires. The Grand Cherokee L also has some of those off-road features, but it doesn’t offer all-terrain tires on any of its trim levels.

Engine & Performance Comparison

You will find the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 as the standard engine for both SUVs. It delivers 293 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque for the Grand Cherokee; meanwhile, the Grand Cherokee L’s engine has 290 horsepower and 257 lb-ft of torque, almost identical. Upgrading to the 5.7-litre HEMI V8 engine boosts output for the Grand Cherokee to 360 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. In comparison, the Grand Cherokee L gets the same amount of torque from the V8 engine but slightly less horsepower at 357 horsepower. Both SUVs get the same eight-speed automatic transmission, making them very close in performance, although, since the Grand Cherokee is slightly lighter, it will have better acceleration and efficiency. The difference for engine options is only there if you opt for the Grand Cherokee’s top two performance trims, which feature either the massive 6.4-litre V8 HEMI or the supercharged 6.2-litre V8 HEMI engines.
